ShambroLa Wood Art is owned and operated by Mick and Deb Shambro. We are located in beautiful Lexington, Kentucky. Like so many crafters, we do our woodworking as a hobby in our ‘spare time’. We started out making ornaments for our Christmas tree about 4 years ago and got totally hooked on the art of scroll-sawing. We do not have a shop, we work from our home. The garage has become a woodshop, and the house has been pretty much taken over with our work in various stages of completion. We both work full-time jobs in the computing industry and find wood working to be a welcome relief from the high-tech world. We hope to continue producing quality wood art for others to enjoy well into retirement! We pride ourselves in using only quality hardwoods with natural finishes. We primarily use maple, cherry, mahogany, walnut and birch. We specialize in wooden portraits and are now making our own creations from patterns we have designed. Both of us work on the design and conceptualization of our pieces.
Our patterns are created from photographs we have taken ourselves or from free public domain photos. The photos are brought into Adobe Photoshop and converted into a black and white pattern. From there quite a bit of artistic skill is involved to bring forth a workable pattern. This process can take 10-20 hours to complete. Once you have the final pattern, it is then applied to the wood and carefully cut with the scroll-saw. All patterns are cut by us to insure the validity and workability of the pattern.
Though our specialization is in portraits we also create a wide variety of other wood art including; plaques, clocks, trinket boxes, coasters and even bookmarks. It is nice to be able to provide ‘something for everyone’.
All of our pieces are hand-sanded and dipped in linseed oil, which seals the wood and brings out the grain. Next they are coated with 2-3 coats of clear polyurethane to preserve and protect the finish. We never apply stain to our hand crafted pieces. Our finished products are of the highest quality and are individually created.
We are happy to take custom orders and to work with our customers to create exactly what they want. Please check out our website at www.shambrolawoodart.com for samples of our work. All contact information is contained on our website.
